If you'd like to make your own foray into jewellery design, talk to Don Sankley. The Dubai-based silversmith and tutor, who has more than 30 years of experience, runs weekly two-hour classes in locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. No experience is necessary. A ring workshop, for example, could see you walk away with a finished handmade ring in just four hours. A course lasts six weeks, with an option to extend to a further six weeks.
"These classes give people time to build their skills and make as few or as many pieces as they wish" says Sankley, a long-term UAE resident, who also runs weekly classes for after-school clubs.
Sankley spent eight years in the ecclesiastical silverware division of a local church furnishing company, learning everything from basic repairs to eventual design and manufacture, which led to him gaining his Craft and Advanced Silversmithing certificates, something that would set him up for his future business. He returned to school as a mature student a few years later.
"In the UK at that time, there was a shortage of DT [design technology] teachers, especially with industrial experience, and so I took a 'mature student' grant and returned to college for a teaching degree, then spent 23 years in the classroom teaching DT," During his training he became increasingly inspired by Scandinavian silverware, especially that of Georg Jensen, "the work is based around clean, pure, simple lines which complements the metal when its polished," he explains.
"I discovered there was such a demand for adult vocational classes here in the UAE so I made the decision to leave the classroom and set up my business. I now travel independently to schools and colleges to deliver my classes to school students and adults."

Not many people know about the origins of Lalique and the extraordinary talent of its three generations of designers.
It all began with Rene Lalique (1860-1945), an artist who revolutionised jewellery-making and who, as early as 1885, started to create unrivalled Art Nouveau works of art in his own name, before going on to become a master glass-maker in the Art Deco movement.
Lalique’s work came at a time of intense artistic movement in France, which can only be compared with the Renaissance period in Italy.
There was a very special kind of creative energy at work, which left Paris almost breathless, carried along on a wave of artistic feats and technical innovations.

Echelon Corporation, the world's leading control networking technology provider, today announced that its Interoperable Self-Installation (ISI) technology, an innovative, simple way to install and configure communities of devices on a control network – which increasingly comprise the Internet of Things (IoT) – was awarded U.S. Patent number 8,374,104. Echelon has implemented ISI in its products, and Echelon customers have created commercial offerings based on the now-patented technology.
ISI dramatically simplifies the configuration tasks associated with creating 'communities of devices' – including everyday digital devices that are interconnected over a network and that perform common tasks. A community of devices is one that shares information and decision-making locally on a peer-to-peer basis, and that may or may not connect to the Internet.
"Within the overall Internet of Things category, millions of simple legacy devices are being overlooked, and it's these communities of devices where Echelon is focused with our ISI technology," said Varun Nagaraj , senior vice president and general manager, Echelon. "People don't want to perform configuration and management duties for their light switches, HVAC or security systems, nor do these systems require complex Internet-based applications to perform useful tasks automatically. Echelon's ISI technology allows a community of devices such as an energy management system and solar power monitoring system to communicate directly, with little or no consumer involvement and without using the Internet. ISI manages the connections so the devices recognize each other, find their own 'place' on the network and don't interfere with each other."
For example, a user may wish to create a community of devices in a building that includes light fixtures, switches and motion sensors. With ISI, the user can simply use physical push buttons on the devices themselves, virtual buttons on a centralized application, or automatic installation processes to connect, configure and control the devices, without the need for extensive training.
"ISI provides a simple, easy-to-operate method for registering devices developed by System Level Solutions (SLS) Corporation, such as our In-Home Controller and lamp and appliance modules, into the Echelon ecosystem," said Paresh Patel , president and CEO at SLS, an Echelon customer that is incorporating ISI technology into products it sells to consumers. "The ease of use and reliability provided by the ISI technology enhances our product value to the end user. In just a few minutes, a user can add a new device and start using it without worrying about what's going on underneath. It just works!"

Who are you kidding? You're probably racing to or from work along with hundreds of other people and the anxiety level you feel is indescribably high. You may want to try to meditate or center yourself in stressful situations like these, but never actually remember to do it.
This week, I tested two sensors that might help: the $99 HeartMath Inner Balance Sensor for iOS and $119 Tinke by Zensorium. Each device plugs into Apple's iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, and digitally monitors heart rate and breathing patterns, offering on-screen coaching to get you into a calmer zone.
While a traditional heart monitor often just spits out a number, both the HeartMath Inner Balance and Tinke provide feedback as you use them. People who meditate regularly but don't know whether or not their heart and breathing are reacting to their meditations will get some specific answers with these devices and apps. Both of these free apps offer ways to save results and share them via email or social networks. Using them taught me how to lower my heart rate and steady my breathing.
The HeartMath sensor is the company's first mobile device after years of working only on computers. One end clips to an earlobe, resembling a Bluetooth headset from afar, and uses an infrared sensor to see blood flowing through the skin and measure heart-rate variability. The other end attaches to an iOS device.

At the annual Wango Tango concert and corporate marketing event Saturday, an endless stream of Twitter messages from fans scrolled across the video screens throughout the day and night as though reporting breaking news.
“I luv u mom and dad thanks for everything luv Mel,” read one tweet as singer-TV personality Adam Levine and his band Maroon 5 performed a half-hour of catchy hits, mainstays on the playlist of KIIS-FM (102.7), the radio station that produces Wango Tango.
“Lyndon will u go to prom with me?” wondered another, strategically planted while rising R&B singer Miguel was making the ladies, teens and tweens swoon during his sunset half-hour of romancing. “I love u chula, more than you’ll ever know,” read another as the single-day event, Home energy monitor which featured some of commercial pop radio’s biggest names, turned to night and thousands of glow sticks illuminated the fans.

This display didn’t augur well for Hibernian, particularly since it featured, at its heart, a powerful performance from the fit-again Scott Brown.

Brown was given the man of the match award, despite only having played for an hour. By this time Celtic had drawn three goals ahead and Lennon could afford to be careful with his captain. The government has big plans to massively expand the scope of the Department of Public Enterprises, enabling it to take charge of more commercially driven state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
Sources familiar with the process say the intention to draw state oil company PetroSA and national broadcaster SABC into the public enterprises fold has been agreed to in principle.
While public enterprises ministry spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete would not be drawn on the reports, it is reliably understood that the Presidency will announce the initiative soon.
Harold Maloka, the spokesman for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane, Home energy monitor would also not comment on the authenticity of the reports, save to say that the SOE review committee had finished its work and handed its findings and resolutions to the cabinet.

After selling his Dallas oil and gas company and moving to Europe, Robert Edsel found himself in the art-drenched Italian city of Florence. Standing on the city's famous medieval covered bridge _ the Ponte Vecchio _ he began to contemplate how so many famous sites and works of art in Europe survived the destruction of World War II.
With the answer, Edsel, the businessman who had developed a love for art, found a mission: Honoring and continuing the work the Monuments Men, a group from Western Allied countries made up mostly of those with an art expertise who worked with the military to protect cultural treasures as battles were waged and, in the years after the war, returned works of art to their rightful owners.
His work over the years _ from founding the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art in 2007 after his return to Dallas to writing three books, including, "Saving Italy," released this week _ has helped bring their story out of scholarly circles and to the public's attention. That recognition is set to skyrocket in December with the premiere of a movie based on Edsel's book, "The Monuments Men," directed by and starring George Clooney.
"I think what they were involved in was pretty epic: Every work of art somewhere on the road during World War II, then finding these things and getting them back. I think they've earned the right to be recognized by name," said Edsel, 56.
Clarissa Post, a Sotheby's art expert, said Edsel's vision always included bringing the story to a wider audience.

Administered by NSTA for the Energy Department, America’s Home Energy Education Challenge inspires student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while encouraging elementary and middle school students to make smarter energy choices and save energy at home.
“America’s Home Energy Education Challenge is all about helping families save money by saving energy,Home energy monitor  while inspiring the next generation of America’s energy leaders,” said Acting Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman. “This competition is giving students across the country the skills and tools they need to reduce energy waste in their homes and to pursue their interests in science and technology.”
“Teachers are always in search of new ideas and creative ways to motivate their students in science,” said Dr. David Evans, Executive Director, NSTA. “America’s Home Energy Education Challenge is a valuable teaching tool for educators, encouraging active learning about conservation and science, while helping to cultivate student interest in the STEM subjects.”
Participation in AHEEC will be broken into two parts: the Home Energy Challenge and the Energy Fitness Award. Each is designed to encourage students to learn about science and home energy savings, and participants can chose one or get involved with both. All students from third to eighth grade are eligible to enter for both parts of the challenge, including students in after school and home school programs.
Through the Home Energy Challenge participants will leverage the power of school spirit to engage rival schools in a local home energy savings competition. Participating student teams will monitor and measure their energy consumption over a three-month period between September 2013 and February 2014, and compare it to data from the same period the year before.

A former British special forces soldier is thought to be among five people arrested in Spain on charges of committing violent criminal acts across the Spanish island of Mallorca, police said on Sunday night.
Spanish police said members of the criminal gang were arrested on Friday on suspicion of committing a number of robberies in Mallorca from May 2009 to June 2010.
The catalogue of crimes, which included raiding one of the island's central shopping malls on three separate occasions as well as breaking into houses and stealing jewellery, is believed to have resulted in gains of more than 280,000 (￡236,000).
Among the five arrested, authorities in Spain have said that one was a British citizen described as "an expert in weapons and military tactics who had belonged to the special forces of the United Kingdom". Two of the others arrested were former members of the Spanish Armed Forces, a statement released yesterday said.
The suspects allegedly began their spree in May 2009 when they stole a truck from a military base and rammed it into the mall. Police have suggested that the gang were well-versed in military training methods and are conducting their enquiries accordingly.

Jani thinks balancing Sur's prominent, wide jawline with a sweetheart necklace set in white metal that rests on her upper chest, with a detachable pendant in blue or aqua will work.
